ABSTRAK
Penulisan ini mengeksplorasi cara pandang berteologi dalam konteks tradisi Selamatan masyarakat Jawa dengan memaknai lirik dari terjemahan lagu “Hymn of Promises” karya Natalie Sleeth. Dengan mempertemukan model budaya tandingan yang diperkenalkan oleh Bevans sehingga penulisan ini mampu memaparkan bagaimana tema besar akan penderitaan, harapan, misteri kehidupan, dan siklus kehidupan dalam Hymn of Promises dapat bersinggungan dengan tradisi Selamatan yang juga turut melibatkan pewaktuan hari ketiga, ketujuh, keempat puluh, seratus hingga seribu hari. Tidak hanya menandai proses transisi spiritual yang dialami oleh roh, tetapi juga menjadi wadah bagi seseorang atau kelompok orang yang ditinggalkan untuk beralih dari masa duka menuju penerimaan akan realita pahit tersebut. Pada akhirnya, seseorang mampu membuahkan aksi dan iman kepercayaan yang mendalam pada kehadiran Tuhan serta memaknai tujuan Tuhan dalam berbagai siklus dan misteri kehidupan.

ABSTRACT
This paper explores a theological perspective in the context of the Javanese Selamatan tradition by interpreting the lyrics of Natalie Sleeth's translation of the song “Hymn of Promises”. By bringing together the countercultural model introduced by Bevans, this paper is able to explain how the big themes of suffering, hope, the mystery of life, and the cycle of life in the Hymn of Promises can intersect with the Selamatan tradition which also involves the timing of the third, seventh, fortieth, one hundred and one thousand days. Not only does it mark the process of spiritual transition experienced by the spirit, but it is also a platform for a person or group of people left behind to move from grief to acceptance of the harsh reality. Ultimately, one is able to generate action and deep faith in God's presence and interpret God's purpose in the various cycles and mysteries of life.
