Abstract

In this contribution we describe how Muslim and Christian Universitystudents in Indonesia deal with religious plurality. We choose for a littlemodifi ed version of Paul Knitter’s most recent classifi cation, because itwas empirically tested in a previous cross-religious comparative study. Weshortly describe the fi ve models theoretically, and try to fi nd traces of thesemodels in both Christianity and Islam. Afterwards we explore the empiricaltenability of the conceptualisation of these attitudes, and explore thepresence of these attitudes among Indonesian University students. We try toanswer (these) research questions: Does the empirical data corroborate withthe theoretical conceptualisation of the attitudes towards religious plurality? What are the attitudes toward religious plurality that can be found amongstMuslim and Christian University students in Indonesia, particularly inAmbon and Yogyakarta, and are there any signifi cant differences between(the) Muslims and (the) Christians? And what are the backgroundcharacteristics and religious images are related to specifi c attitudes towardreligious plurality among our Indonesian students?
