Hebrew text of Old Testament use different attributes to call Godof Israel, namely El, Elohim, and Yahweh. These attributes are using oftentogether or interchangeably. In the period of Israel’s ancestors God wascalled using the name of three ancestors of Israel. God was called as God ofAbraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob. In this period God had personalrelationship with the ancestors. Since the exodus from Egypt, however,God of the ancestor called Himself as God of Israel, God of twelve tribesof Jacob. These facts rise a question whether Israel since period of theirancestor embrace monotheism or polytheism. A conclusion that often putforward is that monotheism in Israel is a long process that started since theexodus from Egypt. Therefore this paper deals with faith in Yahweh in theframe of monotheism. History about Moses, deuteronomistic tradition andtradition of Deutero-Isaiah are three important keys to deal with Yahwehand concept of monotheism in Israel.
