Abstract
This article aims to offer a hospitable hermeneutic to marginal groups by addressing humanitarian topics especially in relation to poverty issues. Biblical narratives pay much attention to the poor who are so ignored and silenced that their existence in public life is denied. Using Spivak’s subaltern theory of hermeneutics, this article reads Luke 21:1–4 from the perspective of the minority. Subaltern hermeneutics invites readers to embrace the spirit of Jesus in fighting against oppression. Jesus’ empathy toward the minority calls contemporary readers to represent the voices of the silenced and the oppressed. The goal is that both the oppressors and the oppressed are healed to celebrate life together.
