Abstract
Works of narrative analysis on the Lazarus’s story in the Gospel of John tend to see the progressions of its plots and characters as flat. This paper proposes an improvisation in the narrative approach of Lazarus’s story, which traces plots and characters within the thematic framework of “death†and “life.†Each character in the story experiences its own “death,†namely physical death; death by disbelief in Jesus; or deadly deep sorrow; but then Jesus gave way to “life,†through the promise of the bodily and eternal resurrection, the promise of salvation by faith in His name, and the promise of consolation in deep sorrow.
